Not only does it need to be the right size it also needs to be the right shape as well as match your existing theme. If you have a room that has dark furniture in it for instance it would look odd if your table and chairs where a light color. Now, you could always go with a glass top table if you don’t have a bunch of children running around the house as it goes with almost any color design.

Depending on the size of your room will dictate the shape your dining table should be, but make sure there is ample room for people to move freely around it even when everyone is seated. Small dining rooms go best with a round table because you can make the most use of the space with them. You may even want to look into a square table if you have ample room and your family is not real big.
After you have decided on size, shape and color you can venture out to look for quality pieces. The best way to go about that is to find out what others have to say. Most online furniture stores have reviews you can read which gives you an idea of what you’ll be getting. One thing you need to keep in mind is that not all bad reviews are what they seem, some people just like to complain, on the other hand not all good reviews are real either. The trick is to find something that has more good reviews than bad and generally you should have something that is of good quality.
I generally like to look for things that are built of solid wood as opposed to a wood finish. Try to find something that looks solid and is built with a strong support.
